What is Necrotizing Enterocolitis?
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious condition in which some of the tissue lining an infant’s intestine becomes diseased and can die. Bacteria can then enter the dead or decaying tissue and infect the wall of the intestine or enter the bloodstream, causing a bloodstream infection.
The surviving tissue becomes inflamed, and the infant is unable to move food through the digestive tract. NEC primarily affects premature and low-birth-weight infants, and in severe cases it can be life-threatening or require surgery.
