How it Started: Zantac History
In 1983, Pfizer gained approval to sell Zantac as a prescription drug. Around 2004, Pfizer received FDA approval to sell an over-the-counter version of Zantac. Combining prescription and over-the-counter sales, Zantac became one of the world’s best-selling drugs. It wasn’t until September 2019 that an online pharmacy informed the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that dangerous levels of NDMA were detected in batches of Zantac. In response, some retailers pulled Zantac from their shelves.
Then, in April 2020, the FDA requested that all retailers remove Zantac-brand heartburn drugs, prescription and over-the-counter, from their shelves. The manufacturers of Zantac listened to the FDA’s request and ceased sales of the drug at this time. The first Zantac lawsuits were filed in 2019.
